Dia De Los Muertos!

Happy Day of the Dead my peeps!

I'm originally from Southern Arizona and this is a big deal there. I'm not being all trendy and celebrating, I've pretty much done this all my life. I think it's a lovely way to remember those who have gone before us.

This is kind of a catch up post; reading and whatnot. Halloween was okay. I probably had about 50 kids total. Our end of the street has no school age kids and the majority of the houses were dark. Approaching our house from the right, you can't see our porch light/pumpkins/candles. I did notice that most of the groups came in cars this year. And I knew most of the kids ("Look, it's the computer teacher!"), even though I don't work at the school anymore. Funny how much they enjoy seeing me...now! ha!

I watched "Hocus Pocus" and "Book of Life" and just kept the volume on low. I also read that Halloween based fic called "Lost in Time". Tradition! His Lordship got home around 8ish (he had to work a 12 hour shift) and then he took over the candy stuff until 9. We shut off the lights and settled in. No little kids usually come out after 9pm.

As far as reading goes:

I finished The Princess Diarist by Carrie Fisher and I'm almost done with Unsinkable by Debbie Reynolds. She's quite the interesting character. I've got another Philippa Gregory book lined up on my tablet next, ummm, "The Last Tudor" I think.

Other than that, pretty normal around here.

We only had about a dozen kids, alas. It's been that way for the past several years. I think that trick or treating is dying out on Phoenix, which makes me sad.

Wow - 50 kids. Halloween is just not that big a deal here. We had one kid who we had to disappoint as we didn’t have anything in the house for kids (and last year we had no callers at all!). I hadn’t put out any decorations so I’m actually surprised they called.

Halloween is still a big deal, in fact one of the biggest, but not so much trick or treating. Parents are just too afraid of their shadows, err, neighbors. It makes me sad.

I guess it's turning more for the adults although you wouldn't know that from the ads on tv.

Speaking of "Hocus Pocus" ...

Happy Day of the Dead!

I read that! Too bad the 'networks' feel the need to update classics all the time.

I'm with you - the lights and the lanterns are out as a welcome from dusk (about 5pm, until about 8.30 - then they come in as all the small folk have finished their rounds by then!

Dressing up and going to a party is for the big people. Trick or treating is for the littles. In my own humble opinion, of course.

Happy Dia de los Muertos to you too! I cannot wait until I am an official Arizonan, if that is a word.

Arizonan is correct!

I know nothing about Day of the Dead celebrations but I'm always so intrigued by it whenever I see it represented on tv or in movies. Probably those are horrible misrepresentations but dear god the clothing and makeup is beautiful!

The movie "The Book of Life" is pretty close. The celebrations I've been too include great food, reverent, but fun, remembrances.

The sugar skulls are fun too. It's a real shame that it's deemed "cultural appropriation" to enjoy these holidays. I like Las Posadas too. Cinco De Mayo is an American holiday (imho).

In other news, I was watching episode 6 today and yelling at the tv! I'm trying to watch one episode a day so I'm trying to stay spoiler free until Sunday night!

OMG episode 6 was pure, unadulterated love for me! <3 Pretty sure we yelled at the tv too XD

I'm trying really hard to be very vague about what I post - I don't want to ruin it for anyone else because it was pure magic for us watching it.

I finished up on Sunday. So.Very.Good!

YAS!!! Did you make it through spoiler free?

[identity profile] manoah.livejournal.com 2017-11-08 05:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I did! It was great! My love is epic.
