My apologies to Dan Wakefield for the title. (James at 15 was my favorite show of the time). Yes, The Spare is 15 today. He's been bouncing around like Tigger all day. Hee. The Heir got him a Perry the Platypus t-shirt and one of his "lady" friends gave him a box of brownie mix. He says she's a lazy lady friend. *snerk* He requested Olive Garden for dinner and we came home with enough food that I won't have to cook tomorrow night. Red Velvet cake for dessert. I am so full.
My mom called while we were out. She remembered it was his birthday. I'm to give him $50 from her account. Then we got to her current drama. Seems the nice lady she's bonded with who does all the activities was "let go". Mom is devastated. And she's manufacturing drama. She seems to think that because they were friends that she'll be somehow penalized now that she's gone. She thinks that the "big boss" will know if she calls her on the phone. Her paranoia gets worse every time I talk to her. She wants me to call the lady and "just give her a friendly voice". Honestly, I have no idea if the lady was fired, quit or what. I do know that she and I talked about her getting work at the school district, so I know she wasn't planning on keeping this job forever. I'm sorry my mom is so upset, but I'm sure she'll get along with new person. She's also lost her watch but she's sure "no one sneaked in and stole it". Uh huh. I need to go over there this weekend and de-clutter her. She puts things away and then can't remember where they are. I better do it this weekend, as next week at work is going to be a bear.
We have this new online testing program that is supposed to start on Monday, but the file hasn't been uploaded to our server yet. The file with all the student info? Yeah, kinda need it. We are at the mercy of this company. I've been told that I'm looking at about 20 hours of overtime every week we have this testing. And I can only take comp time. Lovely.
Lord, Lord, so much to say. My parents. Well, they met and married in six weeks. Looking back at the pictures, my mother was quite the hottie. She had a tiny waist, nice legs and a pretty smile. I've always wondered why my dad married her so quickly as they really wasn't his personality, but now I'll never know. They married in 1957 and I was born in 1961. They seemed to be happy judging from the pictures. I know my mother loved being a housewife and a mom. My dad wanted more. My brother was born in 1963 and my parents divorced in 1967. I've pretty much blocked out all my childhood memories, I can recall a few things if I see pictures, but mostly it's a big blank until school started. I can honestly say that I don't remember my father ever living with us. But I know he did.
In 1968 my dad married my stepmom. They were high school sweethearts. I've read their senior yearbook messages to each other. Oh yeah, they had it bad. But she was rich and Jewish and he was a poor Italian Catholic. Her mother shipped her off to boarding school and my dad went to work. They graduated in 1954, so it wasn't that my mother was a rebound. To this day, my mother is still very bitter about the divorce. She'll tell you how he left her with two little babies (not so much babies, but yeah) to run off with HER. It's only gotten worse the last year as her dementia gets worse.
Dad and stepmom (and my three step sibs) moved to MN. My brother and I flew there every summer for 10 years. My mom met a really nice guy, but he wanted children and she didn't want more so they split up. When I was in 7th grade she married THE ASSHOLE. She was with him until I was a sophomore in college. He beat her. And she stayed. And she hid it from everyone. I kept seeing all these bruised on her legs and arms and I'd ask her about them. She denied, denied, denied. I still don't understand why. He was an evil, awful man. I learned this summer that he's "turned his life around" and stopped drinking. I'm happy for his children. Did I mention he also cheated on my mom with a girl 4 years older than me? He married her and they have 4 children.
About this time, my D & M moved to Salt Lake City. Talk about culture shock! Imagine the Catholic and the Jew in the land of Moroni. Stepmom used to joke it was the only place she wasn't one of the "chosen" people. ;) Remember that guy my mom dated? Well they got back together and that's how I got my stepsis L who is saving my bacon in Tucson on a regular basis. I loved her dad, H, and I was so happy they got married. I had hopes that mom would be happy.
In 1989 I got married, D & M moved to Denver and H stared getting sick. H died in Nov. of 1991. D & M moved to Phoenix in 1991. Mom plugged along, was ecstatic when I had The Princelings and was devastated when we had to move in 1996. She married G in March of 1997.
I've talked about my dad and what he meant to me and how awful it was to lose him so suddenly. Can I just tell you it's equally as hard to watch your parent go slowly, losing their self? It is.
I would like to think I got the best of both of them. I know that no matter what, they love me. And I love them.
