I finished reading the Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer.
There are 4 books in the main series with side stories as well. I haven’t read any of the side stories as yet. The 4 main books are Cinder, Scarlett, Cress and Winter.
In case you couldn’t tell, the stories are derived from the fairy tales of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel (the least obvious) and Snow White. The stories are definitely YA, but drew me in nonetheless. I‘m concentrating this on how the fairy tales correlate to the books, hopefully with no spoilers!
In Cinder there is a stepmother, two step sisters, a “godmother” of sorts and a “Prince Charming”. There is even a scene where Cinder loses her…shoe. At a ball.
In Scarlett there is kindly grandmother, a red hoodie and a big (not so bad) wolf.
Cress is slightly less obvious. She does have long hair, she is isolated. There is an evil presence keeping her locked away. There is dashing Prince/Thief (depends on your version of the story) and he follows the fairy tale fairly closely. In the Disney version they substitute the ‘mushroom soup’ for the rampions (or rapunzels) in the original story. This story does have a version of rampions.
Winter is Snow White without the dwarves. She does have some dedicated followers though. She is related, in a way, to the evil queen. No apple, but there is a poison. She inspires loyalty in all her followers, especially her “prince”.
The other aspect that drew me was the lunar one. I really enjoyed all the usages of the moon stories/mythos. Probably because my first fandom was Sailor Moon. I made my kids watch the DIC show (Girl superheros! Excellent for boys to watch.), ordered all the manga (yes, I have them all), and found the fanfiction on the webz.
Imagine my surprise to find out that the author, Marissa Meyer, started out as fan fiction writer of Sailor Moon stories! Her pen name is Alicia Blade and you can still find her stories online. I was pleased as punch to find her completely open and honest about her start and that she hasn’t gotten rid of any of her Sailor Moon stories. Not to stir the pot, but that is how you segue from fan fic writer to mainstream writer. Don’t hide or deny your past. The internets know all.
I borrowed these books from my digital library and they are quite popular, so I waited a long time to read them all. I think they are light, fun and interesting. Definitely recommend.
As I'd finished these, I was in need of something new and was perusing what was available at my digital library and et viola! Harry Potter and the Cursed Child! I'm into the 2nd act, fun delving back into Hogwarts!
